Say Goodbye to Summer and Hello to Fire Season

Labor Day Weekend heralds the end of summer and the beginning of fall in most of the country. But in California our fall is fire season. Although we've been very lucky this summer with mild temperatures the Pasadena Fire Department wants to remind you that the risk of fire is still high. Clear out any brush that might be around your home and take care when operating gas powered equipment because it only takes on spark to start a roaring fire in dry brush.

Buddhist Monks Create Sand Mandala

The Pacific Asia Museum will host on Sept. 7 to 11 a group of Gaden Jangtse Buddhist monks who will create a sand mandala in the museum’s Focus Gallery and a butter floral sculpture in the Courtyard from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. On Sept. 7, at 10:00 a.m., the event opens with an Opening Blessing, followed by a mandala lecture by Geshe Tenzin Sherab. Construction of the mandala begins with the opening ceremony, which includes chanting of Buddhist prayers, and continues over the next five days. An ancient art form unique to the Tibetan brand of Buddhism, the sand mandala involves creating complicated design of the “world in its divine form” using fine sand that is ground and dyed by hand.

Imagine a small café where you are treated like family and the people at the tables next to you are your neighbors; delicious aromas waft from the kitchen and there is laughter and music in the air. That’s what it’s like having a meal at Zugo’s Café. Sherry Grossi who with her husband Cesare or Chez planned the restaurant “to evoke the feel of a little café anywhere in Italy.” A lot of the recipes used in the restaurant are from Chez’ Italian mother, Palmira. “Our basic principle is we want to offer very great food, and reasonable prices, we make everything fresh, everything from scratch,” said Sherry. “Our menu is extensive but not huge because if it’s made fresh it can’t be 17 pages.”
